What is a Discerning Community?

Our Discerning Communities are short-term, prayerful teams committed to discovering where and how God is inviting us to bring Kingdom hope to new places. 

They accomplish this through three postures: 

Listening to God, to one another, and our neighbours in a specific region.

Learning about the regional community, its needs, and how God is already at work.

Preparing to be sent so that whatever we do next, we do it in step with the Spirit.

This isn’t about building our own plans, but about listening carefully
and responding to what He’s already doing. Think of it as a recon mission with the Holy Spirit.

Our Hope: Four Local Communities
We are a regional church, but we’re sensing God may be leading us to establish local expressions of His Kingdom.

We are currently praying toward launching four Discerning Communities (North, East, South, and West).

Partnering with Alliance Canada
We’re excited to partner with New Ventures, a team that equips churches to follow God into new expressions of mission. With their guidance, we will learn to pray deeply, listen well, and engage meaningfully with our city, discerning where God is already at work and how we can join Him.

  • We are currently praying toward launching four Discerning Communities (North, East, South, and West of Bayview Glen Church). These are directional placeholders, and we’re discerning which specific neighbourhoods within those regions God may highlight.

  • They pray together, visit local neighbourhoods, and talk to leaders and churches already doing great work. They gather what they learn and share it with the whole church to help us understand where God might be leading. They may also host local events to build relationships and explore what sharing the Gospel could look like in that area.

  • We’re prayerfully beginning to launch Discerning Communities starting September 2025, with additional teams forming and launching as they become galvanized and ready.

    This is a Spirit-led process, each team will begin as God stirs hearts, builds unity, and clarifies the way forward in their region.

  • Discerning Communities are short-term teams, not ongoing small groups or study gatherings. They usually meet over a few months, depending on the focus area, with a mix of prayer times, local visits, and team reflections. It’s a focused season of listening to God, learning about the community, and preparing for next steps.

  • New Ventures, a ministry of The Alliance Canada, helps leaders and churches explore new ways of doing ministry in Canada.

    They bring experience in prayerful, Spirit-led, and locally rooted mission work.

    With their support, our Discerning Communities will learn to listen to God and others, lead prayer walks, ask thoughtful questions, reflect on what God might be doing, and share what they’re learning together.

  • One of the most practical and powerful ways you can support is through generosity.

    As we step into this bold vision, your giving helps us take real steps forward, resourcing Discerning Communities, supporting new ministry opportunities, and investing in what God is unfolding across the GTA.

    • Pray with expectancy. Ask the Holy Spirit to reveal where He’s already at work in each region and to guide our Discerning Community teams as they listen, learn, and prepare.

    • Pray for open hearts. Lift up neighbours, friends, and community leaders who will be touched by these conversations. Pray that curiosity would grow and that people would sense God’s invitation.

    • Pray for unity and courage. Cover our teams and our whole church in prayer for bold faith, deep love, and an ear tuned to God’s voice as we follow Him into new territory.

    • Pray right where you’re planted. Pause, look around, and ask, “Lord, what are You doing in my neighbourhood, my workplace, my circles and how can I join You?”

    • Stay engaged. We’ll share regular updates so you can celebrate answered prayers and keep interceding for what’s unfolding in every region.

  • Discerning Communities are a short-term opportunity to listen, pray, and explore where God may be leading. There’s no expectation or obligation beyond that season. Some may feel called to continue, others may feel released, and both are faithful responses.
